Dersane Kidus Raguel / ድንሰነ ቅዱስ ራጔኤል

The Dǝrsan books of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church are collections of homilies—sermons and theological reflections—attributed to early Church Fathers, saints, and Ethiopian monastic scholars. Primarily written in Geʽez, these texts are used in liturgical settings and for teaching the faithful about the lives of saints, the mysteries of the faith, and Christian virtues. Each Dǝrsan typically elaborates on a particular feast, saint, or sacred theme, combining scriptural exposition, patristic commentary, and moral exhortation. They serve to deepen the understanding of doctrine and to inspire spiritual devotion. Key examples include the Dǝrsanä Maryam (Homily of Mary), Dǝrsanä Mikaʾel (Homily of Michael), and Dǝrsanä Giyorgis (Homily of George). These books are integral to the Ethiopian Church’s catechetical and devotional tradition, often read aloud during vigils, feast days, and pilgrimages.
